Aqara China set vs Aqara Global set: what is actually different, and which to buy in Singapore

The Taobao listing is 30% cheaper and the box looks the same. Here is the full list of what changes when you buy the China set, from our experience installing both in Singapore homes.

The short version
  • Aqara runs separate servers for mainland China and for the rest of the world. A China-region device only pairs to a hub and account on the China server. You cannot mix China and Global devices under one Aqara Home account.
  • Hardware is often identical, but the China set may have a Type I plug, Chinese-only voice prompts and display language, different certification (no IMDA registration in Singapore) and firmware that arrives on a different schedule.
  • Matter devices are region-free. A native Matter-over-Thread sensor will join Apple Home or Home Assistant regardless of where it was bought. The Aqara app features stay region-bound.
  • Singapore warranty (12 to 24 months) only applies to products bought through The Trade Gallery or its authorised resellers, registered within 14 days. A China set has no local warranty.
  • Our rule: Global set for anything with a hub, lock, camera, screen, voice or warranty risk. China set only for plain Zigbee sensors that will be paired directly to Home Assistant with no Aqara cloud involved, and only when the client accepts no warranty.

Every month someone sends us a Taobao or Shopee link and asks whether the "China set" Aqara sensor at half the price is the same thing. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is a box that will never pair with the hub you already own. This guide is the checklist we use before answering, written for Singapore homes specifically, where the socket standard, the distributor and the certification rules all differ from mainland China.

Why two versions exist at all

Aqara (Lumi United Technology, Shenzhen) grew up inside the Xiaomi ecosystem, where devices are tied to a regional cloud server. The China server serves mainland China. The international servers serve everyone else, with regional nodes for Europe, the US, Korea, Russia and an Asia-Pacific node that Singapore uses. Each device is manufactured for one server region, and each hub connects to one region at a time.

The result is two catalogues that overlap but are not the same. The China catalogue is larger and gets new products first. The international catalogue carries certifications the China products often lack (CE, FCC, UKCA, and locally, IMDA registration), and it is the only one covered by the Singapore distributor's warranty.

The differences, one by one

Hub compatibilityPairs only to a hub that is itself on the China server.Pairs only to an international hub.
MixingNot possible under one account. A China hub cannot add a Global switch and vice versa. You would run two apps, two accounts, and no shared automations between them.
Plug and socketType I (Chinese) plug on smart plugs and some hubs. Needs an adapter in Singapore.UK Type G for the Singapore market (Power Plug H2 UK, Wall Outlet H2 UK).
Wall switches86 mm boxes, same as Singapore. Some China models are no-neutral only or single-live variants.Singapore/SEA-specific models exist, including the Smart 20A Switch H1 for storage heaters and the H1 EU no-neutral.
Voice and display languageVoice prompts on hubs, locks and cameras start in Mandarin; some can be switched by setting the phone to English. Display panels such as the S1E and V1 cannot change display language.English by default, multiple languages selectable.

MatterHub-bridged Zigbee devices appear as Matter devices in whichever controller you use. Native Matter-over-Thread devices are region-free.Same. Global hubs tend to get Matter feature updates aligned with Apple and Google releases.
FirmwareOften first to receive new features, but Apple-facing fixes can lag; some China hubs have had HomeKit-only-mode update bugs.Certified path for HomeKit and Matter updates.

The one thing that changes everything: how you control it

Most of the pain above lives in the Aqara cloud. If your home does not use the Aqara cloud, most of it disappears.

If you use the Aqara Home app as your main system

Buy Global. Every device, every hub, every camera. The region lock is absolute, the app features are region-bound, and you will be dealing with the Singapore distributor for support. There is no version of this where a China hub saves you money over three years.

If you use Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa via an Aqara hub

Buy Global. The hub is the thing that talks to Apple and Google, and it needs to be the certified international SKU on the international server. Sensors paired to it must match its region.

If you use Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA

Here the picture changes. A Zigbee coordinator in Home Assistant pairs the sensor directly by radio and never touches Aqara's servers. In our experience, most plain China-set Zigbee sensors (door and window, temperature and humidity, motion, water leak, vibration, wireless buttons) pair to Zigbee2MQTT and behave the same as the Global set, because the Zigbee firmware is often shared. Some China-only devices are not in the Zigbee2MQTT device database yet, and a few use different model identifiers, so check the database before buying.

Even here, two things remain true: there is no Singapore warranty, and the device is not IMDA-registered. For a S$20 contact sensor many clients accept that. For a lock or a camera, none should.

Products where the China set is a bad idea

  • Hubs. The hub sets the region for everything under it. Buy the hub Global and the decision is made for you.
  • Door and gate locks. Voice prompts, app enrolment, firmware and warranty all matter on the thing that keeps your door shut. Singapore models also fit Singapore door cutouts and the HDB gate profile. Buy Global, buy local.
  • Cameras and doorbells. Cloud region determines storage, notification routing and HomeKit Secure Video. Global only.
  • Anything with a screen or a speaker. Panel Hub S1 Plus (China variant has a Chinese voice assistant), Touchscreen Switch S100, Climate Sensor W100, MagicPad. Language is baked in.
  • Anything with a plug. Type I plugs and Type G sockets do not agree.
  • High-load switches. The 20A heater switch we use is a Southeast-Asia SKU for a reason. Do not put a China-market 10A switch on a storage heater.

Products where the China set can be acceptable

  • Zigbee contact, motion, temperature and humidity, and water-leak sensors paired directly to Home Assistant, in a home where the owner is comfortable being their own warranty.
  • Wireless mini switches and cubes used as scene buttons in Home Assistant.
  • China-only devices with no international equivalent, when you have confirmed Zigbee2MQTT support and accept the risk.

A useful test: if the device has a plug, a speaker, a screen, a camera, a lock or a hub inside it, buy Global. If it is a small battery sensor and your brain is Home Assistant, the China set can work.

What ELEVATED installs, and why

We buy Aqara through the Singapore distributor and authorised resellers, register every unit for warranty, and keep spares in stock. The reasons are practical rather than principled: we warrant the installation in writing, and we cannot warrant a device we cannot replace. The parts we source from Aqara are the hub, cameras, doorbell, gate lock, water-leak sensors, wall panel, energy-monitoring plugs and the 20A heater switch. Everything else in our homes is our own Matter-over-Thread range, which is region-free by design.

If a client arrives with a box of China-set sensors from a previous flat, we will pair them to Home Assistant where they work, tell you which ones do not, and never mix them into the Aqara app side of the system.

How to tell which set you are holding

  • The box and manual language. China sets are Chinese-only.
  • The model code suffix. International SKUs often carry region letters (EU, US, UK, SEA, CN). "CN" or no region letter with a Chinese-only manual is a China set.
  • Certification marks. Look for CE, UKCA or FCC on the label. A CCC mark alone is China.
  • The plug shape, if there is one.
  • In the Aqara Home app, a device that only appears in the "add device" list when the region is set to mainland China is a China-region device.

Questions people ask

Can I use Aqara China version in Singapore?

Physically yes, since Singapore is 230V 50Hz like China. Practically it depends on how you control it. China devices only pair to a hub and account on the Aqara China server, have no Singapore warranty, are not IMDA-registered, and may have Chinese-only voice or display. They can work when paired directly to Home Assistant via Zigbee2MQTT.

Can I mix Aqara China and Global devices on one hub?

No. A hub sits on one server region and only accepts devices made for that region. Mixing requires two hubs, two accounts and two apps, with no automations between them.

Does Aqara region lock affect Matter?

Native Matter devices are region-free and join any Matter controller. Zigbee devices bridged through an Aqara hub still need to match the hub's region. The Aqara app's own features remain region-bound.

Is Aqara warranty valid in Singapore for Taobao purchases?

No. The Singapore distributor, The Trade Gallery, covers products sold by Aqara Singapore and its authorised resellers, registered within 14 days of purchase. Grey imports are excluded.

Which Aqara hub should I buy in Singapore?

For a Matter home, the international Aqara Hub M3 (Thread border router, Matter controller and bridge, PoE) or Hub M200. Buy from an authorised Singapore reseller so the warranty applies and the hub is on the correct server.

Is the China set cheaper because it is lower quality?

No. The hardware is usually the same. The price gap reflects certification costs, distributor margins, local stock and warranty, all of which you give up when you buy grey.
